First chess stamp

Curious fact

The stamp is one of a set of five. The other four stamps portray bicycle racing, basketball, soccer, and the flags of the nations participating in the Balkan Games: Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Yugoslavia

This stamp is one of a set of five issued to commemorate the 1947 Balkan Games held in Bulgaria, where chess was one of the sports. Hungary emerged as the winner of the chess competition, with a team comprising Bakonyi, Benko, Barcza, Florian, Fuster, Gereban, Szabo, and Szny. The stamp, valued at 9 leva and colored white and orange-brown, was issued on September 29, 1947. It was designed by St. Kancer, with 172,000 copies printed. The vertical inscription reads "Balkan Games 1947," and the horizontal inscription translates to "Republic of Bulgaria."
