The 34th Chess Olympiad, held between October 28 and November 12, 2000, in Istanbul, Türkiye, featured 126 teams in the open event and 86 teams in the women’s event. Despite playing without chess legends Kasparov, Kramnik, or Karpov, Russia secured their fifth consecutive gold. Germany claimed the silver medals, while Ukraine clinched the bronze, edging out Hungary on tie-break. In the women’s tournament, China, the clear favorites based on rating, successfully retained their title. Georgia finished second and Russia third. The Olympiad bulletin, a daily source of information for players and spectators, covered everything from results and standings to pairings and games.
