Curious fact

The rematch rule was nicknamed the "Botvinnik rule" because he twice benefited from it, returning his title: against Smyslov in 1958 and against Tal in 1961

The 1958 World Chess Championship was a rematch between Mikhail Botvinnik and Vasily Smyslov held in Moscow, USSR. Smyslov dethroned Botvinnik a year earlier in 1957, and according to the rules of the time, the defeated champion was entitled to a rematch a year later without going through the qualification. Botvinnik had an amazing start winning the first three games and won the match with an overall score of 12½-10½ claiming back the chess crown.
