The 1954 World Chess Championship took place in Moscow, USSR, between Mikhail Botvinnik and Vasily Smyslov. Botvinnik had held the World Champion title since 1948 and narrowly defended it in 1951 against Bronstein. Smyslov earned the right to challenge Botvinnik by winning the Zürich-1953 Candidates tournament, renowned for its strong players and high-quality games.Despite Botvinnik’s strong start, winning the first two games of the match, the final score ended in a 12–12 tie. As a result, Botvinnik retained the chess crown. The closing ceremony bulletin marked the end of this intense competition.
