In 1986, Dubai hosted the 27th Chess Olympiad from November 14 to December 2. It featured 108 teams from 107 nations competing in a Swiss system tournament over 14 rounds. The Soviet Union, led by world champion Kasparov and former champion Karpov, narrowly secured first place, just half a point ahead of England. The United States, leading before the final round, ultimately claimed bronze. The women’s division saw participation from 49 countries, with the Soviet team, under world champion Chiburdanidze, comfortably winning gold. Hungary and Romania followed with silver and bronze.
