On November 9, 1968, just two days after the 18th Chess Olympiad concluded in Lugano, Switzerland, a Swiss newspaper featured an article about the competition. The piece included a photograph of the victorious Soviet team, with the following players from left to right: Petrosian, Smyslov, Polugaevsky, and Geller (Korchnoi and Spassky were not captured in the picture).A total of 53 teams participated in the Chess Olympiad. The Soviet Union emerged triumphant, winning all but two matches (they had draws with Canada and Germany). Yugoslavia came second, Bulgaria third.
