Vasily Smyslov’s copy of Alexander Alekhine’s book, “My Best Games 1908-1924,” contains an inscription in Russian that reads: “Победителю в матче, будущему чемпиону Васе Смыслову от дяди, 29 мая 1928” (“To the winner in the match, future champion Vasya Smyslov, from uncle, May 29, 1928”). Smyslov was seven years old and had become interested in chess a year earlier. This book became one of his favourites and a constant reference.
