Curious fact
World championship match participants often did not announce their resignation before the game was about to resume in order to make their opponents spend time and energy preparing for the continuation of the game which they knew would not happen
Scoresheet of Game 6 of the 1981 World Championship Match in Merano, Italy, handwritten by Anatoly Karpov. This was Viktor Korchnoi’s first win in this match which finished 6-2 in Anatoly Karpov’s favor. The scoresheet includes the note addressed by Karpov to the chief arbiter of the match, Paul Klein: “Respectful Mr. Klein, I resign the 6th game of the match.”Each player had two and a half hours to make 40 moves after which the game could be adjourned and resumed the next day. The 30-year-old World Champion did not arrive at the continuation of the game, instead sending the signed resignation note an hour before play was to resume.
