In a reversal of fortune from the previous Olympiad, the East German hosts finished 9th, right behind rivals West Germany. The match between the two teams ended in a 2–2 draw
In the autumn of 1960, Leipzig, East Germany hosted the 14th Chess Olympiad. A total of forty teams participated in this prestigious competition. The formidable Soviet team, comprising six grandmasters and guided by world champion Mikhail Tal, secured their fifth consecutive gold medals. The United States and Yugoslavia claimed silver and bronze, respectively.
