Members of the Soviet team won individual gold medals on four out of six boards: Anatoly Karpov on board one, Boris Spassky on board three, Tigran Petrosian on board four, and Mikhail Tal as the first reserve

The 21st Chess Olympiad took place from 6 to 30 June 1974 in Nice, France. Seventy-four teams participated. The Soviet team won by 8.5 points, the largest victory margin yet, and took home their twelfth consecutive gold medals. Yugoslavia and the United States won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
