Havana, Cuba, hold the 17th Olympiad between October 23 and November 20, 1966. Fifty-two teams entered the competition. West Germany boycotted the event for political reasons, while the USA, just a couple of years after the Cuban crisis, did not hesitate to come. The Soviet team won the Championship for the eighth time, displaying effective form throughout and conceding but one drawn Match. The U.S. team finished in second place thanks to Robert Fischer, who scored at board one 15/17.
