Curious fact

As the Olympiad coincided with the outbreak of World War II, many European players decided not to return to their countries and stayed in Argentina or moved elsewhere in South America, including Miguel Najdorf, Gideon Ståhlberg, and Erich Eliskases

The 8th Chess Olympiad was held in 1939 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Twenty-seven teams took part. Germany won the tournament with 36 points, just half a point in front of runner-up Poland. Estonia finished third with 33½.
