1937 World Championship Match between Max Euwe and Alexander Alekhine

The match in 1937 was the last World Championship where the world champion had control of the title and could set match conditions. After WWII and Alekhine’s death in 1946, FIDE stepped in to take control of the World Championship
The second World Championship Match between Max Euwe (right) and Alexander Alekhine (left), played in the Netherlands in 1937. Alekhine regained his title by winning 15½-9½. The sentence on the side of the table reads “Wij verzoeken om de grootst mogelijke STILTE” (“We ask for the greatest possible SILENCE”).
